Poston Memorial Monument – Poston AZ

On our way to our next stop, Senator Wash – Yuma Proving Ground, we stopped at the Poston Memorial Monument.  This is a monument dedicated to the 17,867 people of Japanese ancestry, citizens and alien, men, women and children who were incarcerated at this site from May 5, 1942 to November 28, 1945 and to the soldiers who were from this concentration camp and were killed in action, as well as the Indian tribes on whose land the monument stands. Internees of Poston Camps I, II and III and friends constructed it in 1992.

1200 Sons and brothers volunteered from Poston Camps I,II and II to serve our country, they fought for our release; these soldiers gave their lives to prove their loyalty. This was a very moving stop.

Poston Memorial Monument
I know this is hard to read but it is very interesting. All these people put in a camp just because they were of Japanese ancestry, even though they were citizens of the United States. History is not always fair or good, but it is a lesson to learn from and move forward.
There are memorial bricks placed all around the edge of the memorial with names of people who died serving the United States, even after they or a family member had been placed in this camp.
