Shepard State Park – Gautier MS – Jan 27, 2022

Our next overnight was at Shepard State Park. It was a short drive from the brewing company, but once again, we had the ability to get water and dump our tanks. This was a more rustic campground with dirt roads, but it too had its special amenities. You would never expect this park to be where it was located.. LOL.. and once again, there were trains close by! It seems that just about everywhere we have stayed there have been trains that come thru at about 3am.. I think that must be part of staying in campgrounds.. that there be a train track close by so you can hear the horn in the middle of the night!

After our visit, I learned that the Welcome Center where I went in to register for our stay was a 100 year old cabin that was donated by the Cox family. It was built in the 1920s on land that is approximately one mile north of what is now Interstate 10 in Gulfport. The two story house was constructed of Southern yellow pine logs cut from their property. It was built by hand with mortar between all the logs. This is a picture of it before it was moved.
This is how it appears now.
Our site for one night.. shaded but nice and clean.
They even had an Archery Range with over 30 targets placed at different distances in the woods.
This is a map of some of the things that you could do, but we were only there for one night and arrived late in the afternoon!
