Museum of Western Art – Kerrville TX – Jan 5, 2022- Jan 6, 2022

Our next stop was another Harvest Host location and was in the ‘Texas Hill Country’ located in Kerrville Texas.  The museum promotes and preserves the heritage of the American West.  Every aspect of western life was depicted.  We saw paintings, bronze statues and carvings of Plains Indians, women of the West, settlers, mountain men and more.  There were other exhibits that depicted the history of some of the famous ranches, the diversity of our Western culture and the traditional talents of its skilled craftsmen.  There was aldo exhibit that depicted what it was like for a child when a family decided to move ‘West’. There was a journal written thru the eyes of a child about the experiences and hardships the families endured while crossing the west in covered wagons in search of a better life.  There’s a picture of a covered chuck wagon and Chet and I decided they were the first RV’ers and that Indians were the first ‘tent campers’ with their teepees!

Glad I didn’t have to plan means in anything like this. The RV is enough of a challenge! I don’t think I would make it in a tent either back then!

One of another neat things this museum had was 23 ceiling domes called ‘boveda’ domes.  It was explained to us by one of the volunteers, that a Mexican family from Guanajuato constructed these domes and that it took an average of one day to build each dome.  The bricks contain pumice so it makes them lighter and a special mortar is also used.  Therefore, due to the materials that were used and their design, the domes were built without the use of braces or forms.  They were really neat to look at and all looks perfectly symmetrical.

These were sooo cool! (This picture doesn’t do them justice!)

Once again we really enjoyed this Harvest Host stay.  There were deer everywhere, which is what we have experienced throughout our travels thru Texas!  The artwork was great and the stories the volunteer told us about some of the artists were very interesting.  Totally worth the stop!  Below are some of the pictures I took of the artwork.  They did have alot of saddles and bridles from different cowboys!

This desk was beautiful and the picture doesn’t do it justice!
Deer run all day and all night thru the property!
This is my favorite picture.

I remember them from my childhood. My mom had one from my grandparents family farm in Maryland.
